Three Drugstore Foundations For Women Over 50

Shopping for foundation when you’re 50 can be extremely frustrating. Most foundations you’ll find on shelves will promise full coverage and long wear, which they tend to deliver for younger skins, only for the same product to look thick, cakey, and settle into every line you’re trying to hide.

Then, when you realize that the product you’ve been using for years no longer works, you’re forced to go through the process of trying out new products, looking at reviews and doing everything in between all over again. Or at least you would, had you not found this article.

I’ve tested hundreds of drugstore foundations, and learned which ones work best for mature skin. These brands are not famous, they don’t get hype or the luxury label, but they get the job done better than anything else in the market.

First, Some General Tips

First let’s go back to that hurtful moment for a bit and understand why the same old foundations are no longer working. As you age, your skin starts to lose moisture and acquire texture, which changes how most makeup interacts with your skin as you no longer have the oils that those products relied on to settle correctly.

That means you can no longer just apply full coverage foundation, which now makes it look like you’re wearing a mask, and instead should go for light or medium coverage. Think “your skin, but better” instead of  a perfectly airbrushed look.  You want to be able to see your actual skin through the foundation as that’s what makes it look natural and fresh.

Since you’re working with less moisture, you’ll also want to hydrate often and look for foundations with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ingredients like vitamin B3 (niacinamide). These help your skin hold onto moisture instead of emphasizing dry patches. Serum foundations are another great option because they feel lightweight and deliver hydration along with coverage.

Lastly, pay attention to the finish and skip anything labeled “ultra-matte.” Matte foundations make mature skin look flat and lifeless. You want something with a radiant or satin finish that catches light in a flattering way and makes you look healthier and more rested.

My Top Drugstore Foundation Picks for 2025

After testing dozens of options this year, three foundations keep making it into my regular rotation and I reach for different ones depending on what I need that day.

Versed Serum Foundation

This is my number one pick for 2025. It has a hydrating formula with clean ingredients, and is built in SPF 40. That’s huge because most of us don’t apply enough standalone sunscreen to get full protection, so having it in your foundation gives you an extra layer of defense.

The coverage is light to medium and completely buildable too, so I can wear it alone for a natural look or build it up where I have redness or age spots. The finish is radiant without being shiny or highlighting texture and it legitimately looks like healthy skin.

I also love its staying power because then I don’t have to worry about it looking patchy after a few hours.

Revolution Skin Silk Luminous Serum Foundation

If you’re looking for something to make you glow that won’t feel oily, this is the best option. Some luminous foundations make you look like you’ve been dipped in grease, and they tend to feel just as comfortable. This is not one of them.

The serum formula feels lightweight and absorbs into skin instead of sitting on top, and it works beautifully with brush application, which helps it melt into texture rather than emphasizing it. I grab this when I want polish without looking overdone.

It has a decent shade range and the price point means you don’t lose much from experimenting. So If you’ve been nervous about serum foundations seeming too glowy, this is the best place to start.

Maybelline SuperStay 24-Hour Skin Tint

Now let’s talk about a work foundation, something that should be able to stay put and look good throughout the day without having to worry about blurs, smudges or having it run down your face.

This is whereSuperStay shines. This foundation is resistant without ever being heavy, or giving you that cakey feeling that usually comes with long-wear formulas. That balance is tricky with mature skin, but Maybelline manages it quite well.

A good part of what makes it work is that fact it’s a  “skin tint”, in other words, it’s not trying to be full coverage, just evening tone and adding a wash of color that looks skin-like.

That being said, I’d recommend letting the moisturizer fully absorb before applying this product. Give it a solid five minutes to prep your skin for the formula so that you can get the most out of it.

Primers and Setting Sprays That Actually Help

Besides the foundations themselves you’ll also want a few supporting products that them do their job, be it by moisturizing your skin, helping the products settle or adding certain desirable effects.

For example, a common problem with mature skin is that you’ll often find some problem areas where the foundation just doesn’t stick. This is where I like to strategically apply E.L.F. Power Grip Primer.

Then, if I want to blur some fine lines and pores, I’ll use bakery Beauty Flawless Filter Wrinkle Filler to create a smoother canvas to work on. Just dab it where you have texture to minimize.

Lastly, L’Oréal Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist locks everything down when I need serious longevity. And, if you want to add some sun protection while still getting a nice glow, I’d go for Naked Sundays Hydrating Glow Mist.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need an expensive luxury foundation to look good after 50. The drugstore has caught up, and some of these formulas rival high-end options. What matters is choosing the right type of foundation for mature skin and applying it the right way.

Light coverage, hydrating formulas, radiant finishes. That’s your formula for foundation that actually flatters mature skin instead of aging it.
